Job Description:

The VP of Information Technology establishes the company’s technology vision and aligns it with business strategy by integrating company processes and products with the appropriate technologies. This individual is responsible for all aspects of building, developing and implementing a product development practice that compliments and accelerates Solution Tree's assets and strategies as well as developing and implementing technology initiatives within the organization and works at all levels of the organization to turn business goals into reality through the management and implementation of technological resources. The VP of Information Technology oversees the development and implementation of new technologies, whether for use within the company or for sale in the market; participates in initiatives related to products the company offers or has the potential to develop; ensures a clear program scope is agreed upon by all stakeholders and manages the accountability of the project; manages the software and analytics product portfolio, including P&Ls; plans upgrades or transitions related to the technology or hardware used within the company; maintains existing enterprise systems; provides direction in all technology-related issues in support of information operations and core company values; directs company-wide training of technology processes; supervises all IMS staff and operations; manages technological cross-training within and outside IMS department; promotes and fosters innovation and high-performance use of information technology throughout the company.

Primary Duties of the Information Technology portion:

  • As a member of the senior leadership team, participates in planning corporate growth and coordinating strategic plans with the development of information systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Identifies opportunities, obstacles, challenges, and risks related to the technology involved in delivery of the company’s current and future products and services.
  • Identifies and recommends technology initiatives and roadmaps to structure and streamline the development and deployment of all products and services.
  • Conducts research on leading-edge technologies, including win/lose interviews and market testing of new features, to make determinations on the probability of implementation.
  • Evaluates and recommends appropriate technologies and skills to improve and facilitate the delivery of the company’s products and services.
  • Identifies technological trends that may support or hinder the success of the company; collaborates with other department heads as an advisor of technologies that may improve their efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with departments to track the development of digital product marketing collateral.
  • Authors program proposals and reviews proposals for both technical and programmatic excellence. Oversees sub-contractor performance on technology-related tasks. Provides advice on programmatic issues, including staffing and budget. Supports process improvement activities, risk management activities, and continuity of operations planning.
  • Writes department annual budgets and administers funds according to budget approval.
  • Evaluates new equipment, software and processes continuously, recommends changes as appropriate, and supervises the implementation. Ensures that rigorous quality assurance methods are in place.
  • Identifies vendors, partners, and hardware and software resources.
  • Proposes budgets for programs, projects, purchases and upgrades for equipment.
  • Creates, maintains, and enforces written policies and procedures regarding all computer operations in the IMS department and throughout the company.
  • Leads all activities and supervises staff of the IMS department. Works with users to define requirements, produce system specifications, coordinate programming, and determine priorities. Manages staff to determine training needs and coordinates training. Ensures optimal customer service by overseeing staff’s responsive technical assistance and support to users, specifically related to Acumen. 

Works closely with:

  • The company executives and other senior leadership teams to support strategic planning and product development
  • The IMS team to supervise operations for internal support and initiative implementation
  • Vendors to guide and support their work on products and tools
  • Departmental managers to ensure needs are met and to advocate for high-performance use of technology

Primary Duties of the Product Planning & Development portion:

  • Lead the overall planning and competitive marketing strategy for assigned products and solutions to meet revenue and profit goals;
  • Coordinate Solution Tree and Marzano Research’s divisions to lead and manage the development of new proposals and business cases created by assigned teams;
  • Ensure the market and business requirements across assigned products are aligned to customer needs and revenue and profit goals;
  • Lead and manage ongoing market intelligence activities and develop deep customer insights to support new opportunity identification and business case development of new opportunities;
  • Manage and prioritize a backlog of product enhancements relative to Solution Tree strategies and budgets.
  • Manage and prioritize outstanding bugs of digital products to ensure high quality service to Solution Tree customers.
  • Work directly with Solution Tree’s application development and quality assurance resources to ensure high quality and timely releases of digital products and enhancements
  • Collaborate with Solution Tree’s CEO, President and Accounting team to approve product concepts, business models, and financial alignment for program investment;

Product Life Cycle Management:

  • Drive financial performance of entire product group, including investment, revenue, and profitability;
  • Analyze and evaluate market performance and product positioning;
  • Coordinate with Solution Tree Marketing management to benchmark against competition and market;
  • Review and provide input on investment for product maintenance;
  • Oversee the development of documentation and systems for digital product support;
  • Work directly with Solution Tree’s implementation and customer support teams to ensure that digital product customers are supported and retained.

 Marketing Strategy:

  • Lead Solution Tree’s cross-departmental digital strategy team to set goals, budget, and business requirements for annual marketing plan.
  • Contribute to go-to market strategy for all new solutions across product(s);
  • Ovesee sales training for digital products;
  • Direct strategic options and responses before, during, and after key marketing campaigns; work closely with sales leads to ensure correct strategy and execution;


Market Intelligence:

  • Oversee and contribute to market research activities related to Solution Tree’s digital strategies;
  • Design product and marketing strategies and positioning using market intelligence;
  • Analyze and interpret market data and trends, provide recommendations to teams based on that analysis;

 Business Analysis:

  • Manage and monitor financial performance of all digital product lines;
  • Analyze product(s) profit and loss statements; collaborate Solution Tree’s Accounting team to monitor profitability across products;
  • Use quantitative data and qualitative analysis, including deep customer research.
  • Review and approve product-pricing strategy for all digital products:
  • Lead cross-functional teams to execute processes and plans related to digital products;

Experience and Skills:

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree, preferred education MBA or Masters preferably in the content area of in business management or marketing
  • At least 10 years of experience in K12 technology with managerial experience
  • Experience in an entrepreneurial or start-up environment
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills
  • Proven ability to architect and implement technical initiatives successfully
  • Ability to hire, train, and manage staff
  • Project management expertise
  • Superior communication skills in written and oral presentation, with a variety of audiences
  • Superior inter-personal skills with all levels including executive management
